Folding Yoga for Strength & Flexibility into Your Routine

“I don’t have time to fit yoga into my training routine!” Many runners love the benefits of yoga but find it hard to fit a class into their routine — particularly if they’re already logging many miles. Here’s a suggestion: warm-up for your run with four Salutes to the Sun.

A simple routine like that will do a lot to build strength and flexibility, say veteran marathoners Ann Igoe and Sue Gustafson (Ann made the Olympic Trials and Sue won her age division at Boston). Both also have a background teaching yoga.

For a simple website that shows Sun Salutes in motion, refer to www.yogasite.com. My runners who do just four Sun Salutes a a day four days a week say they feel these exercises have made their strides feel more fluid. So — you don’t have to worry about attending yoga classes, particularly during the marathon mileage season!
