Hot Lists in Hartshorne Masters Mile

The starting lists have just been released for this Saturday’s (23 Jan) 43rd Hartshorne Masters Mile. Race Director Tom Hartshorne says, “The fields are the strongest ever and very competitive in all four elite races – so we are very excited about not only having these talented runners here in Ithaca (New York), but getting to watch these races as well!”

I’ve posted the women’s lists below and they include some of the fastest masters women in the US and Canada. Finally we get see the match up of Alisa Harvey and Aeron Arlin-Genet (featured in WRT), who’ve been burning the track in recent years and taking names of their much younger opponents. Also in the W40 race you’ve got Lisa Valle who bagged both the 1500 and 800 gold medals at the 2009 World Masters Championships in Finland.

Both the W40 and W50 races are a collection of fast and strong women. What a celebration of women’s running. Would love to be there to watch them strut their stuff.

Tom is known for treating his runners like royalty. Check out the invitation posted on Running Diva’s (Aeron’s) facebook page!

Many will argue that the 100m is the glamor event in the Olympics but being a distance woman nothing comes close to the mile (1500M). For one it’s not over in seconds, it’s so tactical and you need a combination of strength and speed.

No women 60 and over – or are they just “not worth mentioning”?

Good point Mary. Tom didn’t send any other lists. Are you running?

  3. There will be some 60+ women; the oldest woman should be around 80. Tom Hartshorne has sent the lists for the two women’s elite races, which are 40+ and 50+. Thus, to be in an elite race (and to be mentioned here), a woman in her 70s, for example, would have to go against much younger women. I can’t recall a single woman above the 50-59 category who has ever been in 50+ elite at the Hartshorne.

This is a race to watch — what a great roster — and Mary raises a good issue about women 60 and over. What about a race for them! Mary would certainly be one — and she’s 74!

Check out this cool video by Running Diva Aeron & hubby Mark. These Californians are getting taste of winter in New York.
