I agree with Coreen re pre run warm-up drills and dynamic stretching. Static stretching of muscles can be a bit dangerous. As for post run stretches - always a good idea - but I admit I do not always do them. I seem to have post run amnesia about stretching. I have some old tennis balls that I use for trigger point work - and a dog ball to use for my feet.
I am a bit "underwhelmed" by the USATF pre run stretch study.

I am a HUGE believer in pre run warm up and dynamic stretching. Sometimes I just want to head out the door and get going but I try to do my pre run routine even if I'm only going out for a very short jog. No study in the world could convince me it isn't the way to go. I am also a convert to the Trigger Point therapy products and use them daily - always after a run and sometimes before if I have time. Best money a runner will ever spend.

Hi Carmel

May I also suggest (if possible) gazebo's with sprayers, anywhere on the outside of the track - they also use them in road races for runners to cool off, but can be used by all participants, track and field. I think it may save on medical costs in the long run !

Thanks for that article Joanna. I hadn't seen it before...not sure how I ended up pulling it up. It was encouraging to me; i am thankful whenever I am able to get on a starting line and not be hurting at the start. I do not take it for granted. see you out there! tk

Sabra:

We admire you so much. I was watching you warm up on Sunday and thought about the awesome task you had in front of you: break the American or world record for 1500 in W60.

A few minutes later, there you were, flying down the final straightaway toward your world mark of 5:12.27.

Sabra,
Congratulations on your 1500 on Sunday. I managed to snap a couple of photos of you during the race and posted them on flickr.com. You can access them under "masters 1500". Feel free to download them for your mom or anyone else that would like a copy.

I contacted Marilyn Mitchell who is on the WMA Organizational Committee and she will send an email to Stan Perkins, President of the WMA with a link to this blog. Marilyn says, "I have already spoken directly to the LOC and to our US federation about several items and for the most part they seemed very cooperative and eager to please".

So keep share your thoughts.

WMA meets have medal presentation stands - mostly it is a nice ceremony. Indoor USATF awards are often just at a table and handed out upon request - as was done in Sac. However Sac did one-up all the others by handing out generic USATF National Medals with NOTHING on them - no sticker - nothing - to indicate what meet, where, and when. That is sad.

John McCasey is the Executive Director for Sacramento 2011. According to the WMA booklet the email address is info@wma2011.com. Send your suggestions there and hope that there will be a positive reception to thoughtful suggestions.
